Die im spätantiken Persien erfundene Konjunktionsastrologie untersucht nicht individuelle Geburtshoroskope, sondern seltene Planetenkonjunktionen, aus denen sie große historische Ereignisse, insbesondere die Schicksale von Königreichen und Religionen, voraussagt. Durch arabische Schriften wurde diese Lehre dem Abendland vermittelt und entfaltete dort vom 13. bis 17. Jahrhundert eine enorme Wirkung.
Diese wurde bisher kaum erforscht; wissenschaftliche Editionen und Kommentare zu frühneuzeitlichen Konjunktionsprognosen fehlen bisher völlig. Diesem Missstand soll eine auf drei Bände konzipierte Studie abhelfen, die sich exemplarisch auf die zahlreichen Prognosen anlässlich der Saturn-Jupiter-Konjunktionen von 1484 und 1504 konzentriert.
Der hier vorgelegte erste Band bietet eine Einführung in das Gesamtwerk und erschließt danach den frühesten relevanten Text, den Johannes von Lübeck 1474 in Padua verfasste, unter philologischen, astronomischen, astrologischen, theologischen, dämonologischen und kulturgeschichtlichen Gesichtspunkten.
Dieser Text macht detaillierte Voraussagen dazu, wann und wie die nach zeitgenössischer Überzeugung nicht mehr ferne letzte Weltreligion, die Schreckensherrschaft des Antichristen, kommen werde. Es handelt sich in mehrfacher Hinsicht um einen der wichtigsten Texte des untersuchten Zeitraums. Eine Analyse seiner Rezeption durch frühneuzeitliche Leser in verschiedenen sozialen Milieus und in verschiedenen Teilen Europas rundet den ersten Band ab.

Of Perso-Arabic origin, conjunction astrology bypasses individual birth horoscopes in favor of those rare conjunctions of planets on which historical events-especially the fates of dynasties and religions-were thought to depend. Brought to Europe via Arabic texts, this doctrine exerted an enormous impact on late Medieval and Renaissance culture.
Volume 1 offers a general introduction to the project followed by a critical edition with German translation of the earliest relevant text. Here John of Lübeck, writing from Padua in 1474, predicts in detail when and how the Antichrist's reign of terror, widely anticipated as the last world religion, will arrive.

Se il presente volume si concentra soprattutto sulla trattazione di Johannes von Lübeck (Giovanni di Lubecca) e sulla ricezione del suo pronostico (Prognosticum Ioannis de Lubec Almani super antechristi aduentu Iudeorumque messiae), il progetto intrapreso da Heilen mira a coprire una produzione molto più estesa, a fronte della quale l'accesso diretto alle fonti risulta al momento molto difficile. Peraltro, con la diffusione della stampa, le congiunzioni dei due pianeti superiori divennero argomento degno anche di pubblicazione e, pertanto, non sarà affatto un caso se proprio la congiunzione del 1484 e quella successiva del 1504 [...], furono le prime ad essere "pubblicate" suscitando un inevitabile interesse per tutte le loro supposte conseguenze.

Heilen passa brevemente in rassegna l'intensa disseminazione nel Medioevo occidentale di tale dot trina, che ritroviamo addirittura in Ruggero Bacone, Dante Alighieri, Regiomontano, Cristoforo Colombo, e molte altre figure di spicco, le quali erroneamente non verrebbero considerate come partecipi di una cultura astrologica così complessa e profonda.
