Heckscher gehört zu der Generation deutscher Wissenschaftler, die in den 30er Jahren emigrierte und sich in England, den Niederlanden und den USA niederliess. Sein Werk, von der ikonographischen Methode Aby Warburgs geprägt, ist, wie Peter Calmeyer es in den German Studies (Section III volume xxi 1988 N° 1, Seite 124f) formuliert, als das eines echten Warburgerianers in vielfältigen internationalen Publikationen verstreut.
